The #BlackGirlFollowTrain is a cultural phenomenon that is taking over the video hosting service, TikTok and is currently the number one trending activity on the highly popular social media application and website. Originated by a Black American woman known as MomtotheKing, the goal is to cultivate an opportunity as a safe space for Black women creators who are often largely ignored and don’t fare well within the site. Whether it is due to TikTok’s complicated algorithm or just a lack of support for this particular demographic, the negative consequences result in an exclusion from opportunities to generate revenue. For many Black women and girls who jumped at the follow for follow trend, it was a chance to show support without discrimination, but this sister circle gathering was quickly interrupted by other demographics adding their two cents about how it should be all women or all black people with no respect of profiles. However, these complaints were mainly ignored by the optimism and hope that the results were producing because 1) Black women have specific issues and concerns that only they can understand and what is already understood doesn’t need to be explained and so many are just exhausted from having to explain their plight to others who will never get it. Adversely, it brought the Black women content creators even closer together and 2) some profiles were seeing immediate results with some accounts growing from 200 followers to more than 50,000 in just a matter of days. With these type of promotions, who would want to miss out on their chance to grow their own following. We can filter out and worry about the distractive talking points later. 3) The follow for follow trend at bare minimum became a simple challenge to help SiStars- as those within the community so affectionately call one another- who struggled to gain a audience reach the 1,000 follower milestone which would then activate the opportunity for their account to go LIVE and begin earning revenue through social currency exchanges, gifts and unlock a plethora of features.

Although I initially hesitated to jump on the follow for follow train, a group of sister friends that were experiencing amazing results kept encouraging me to join the movement. I grew at a steady pace from 450 followers to just a little more than 1,000 followers within a week. Many joined by creating their first ever video via the Cap Cut video editor and/or using popular sounds associated with the stream while those more familiar with the video hosting service added to their already existing rotation of videos which created a dynamic balance and diverse range of content to consume.
