The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced that Zach Edey of Purdue University and Caitlin Clark of the University of Iowa are the winners of the 2024 John R. Wooden Award presented by Principal as the most outstanding player in women’s college basketball. The announcement was made during ESPN SportsCenter. They were joined by their coaches and the Wooden Award All American team at the trophy presentation on Friday, April 12, 2024 at the Los Angeles Athletic Club.
A 2023 Wooden Award winner, Clark becomes the 7th two-time winner of the Wooden Award Women’s Player of the Year (Seimone Augustus [‘05 & ‘06], Candace Parker [‘07 & ‘08], Maya Moore [‘09 & ‘11], Brittney Griner [‘12 & ‘13], Breanna Stewart [‘15 & ‘16], and Sabrina Ionescu [‘19 & ‘20]). This year, she broke the NCAA women’s career scoring record, surpassing Wooden Award winner Kelsey Plum (2017), and became the greatest scorer in NCAA Division 1 history, male or female, surpassing Pete Maravich and ending her career with 3,951 points.
Edey becomes only the second men’s player to win the Wooden Award twice, joining Ralph Sampson (1982 & 1983). While leading the nation in scoring, he broke the career Purdue records for most points and most rebounds.
The Wooden Award All American Team is comprised of ten student-athletes who were the top vote-getters in the quest to earn college basketball’s most prestigious honor. The ten-player team, alphabetically, consists of: RJ Davis (North Carolina), Hunter Dickinson (Kansas), Zach Edey (Purdue), Kyle Filipowski (Duke), Dalton Knecht (Tennessee), Tyler Kolek (Marquette), Jaedon LeDee (San Diego State), Caleb Love (Arizona), Tristen Newton (Connecticut), and Jamal Shead (Houston). The five finalists for the 2024 John R. Wooden Award presented by Principal Men’s Player of the Year are: RJ Davis, Zach Edey, Dalton Knecht, Tristen Newton, and Jamal Shead. The women’s ten-player team, alphabetically, consists of: Georgia Amoore (Virginia Tech), Cameron Brink (Stanford), Paige Bueckers (Connecticut), Kamilla Cardoso (South Carolina), Caitlin Clark (Iowa), Aaliyah Edwards (Connecticut), Hannah Hidalgo (Notre Dame), Elizabeth Kitley (Virginia Tech), Angel Reese (LSU), and JuJu Watkins (USC). The five finalists for the 2024 John R. Wooden Award presented by Principal Women’s Player of the Year are: Cameron Brink, Paige Bueckers, Caitlin Clark, Hannah Hidalgo, and JuJu Watkins.
Voting took place from March 19-26, 2024, by a national collection of voters who cover the sport and former winners. As insisted upon by Coach Wooden at the Award’s creation in 1976, all players considered for the ballot were certified by their universities as meeting or exceeding the academic criteria of the John R. Wooden Award.
